Welcome!

Welcome to the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, an innovative web-based competition for chemists.  From January to June there is a monthly online challenge, open to anyone, any age, from anywhere in the world. In June there is also a written exam for students in Year 12 attending schools in the UK.

The Online Challenge

This monthly challenge has five levels - the latest entry level question is shown on the right. You can use whatever means you like to solve the problems, just type your answer in the box and click Submit. If your answer is correct, you will progress to the next level. If you correctly solve all five levels, you will appear on the C3L6 Honours Board. New challenges will be released at 00:00:01 (UK time) on the first day of each month for January to June. Will you be the first person from your school, your town, your country, or even the first person in the WORLD to complete it? You have one month to try and make it on the honours board.

All the previous challenges are now available in the Online Challenge Archive, together with their honours boards. For those of you who got stuck, the HINT and ANSWER functions now work, just type these into the entry box; typing HINT will give you some help to answer the question; typing ANSWER will give you the answer, leading you to the page with the fully explained solution. These functions will NOT be available on the current challenge!

New for 2012 is the Cumulative Leader Board. After the January's 'warm-up' challenge, as well as having an Honours Board for each month, there will also be a Cumulative Leader Board for the five months February to June. Points will be awarded depending on position in each month's Honours Board and PRIZES will be awarded to the winners from across the world. Full details may be found HERE.

The Lower 6th Competition

Registration to take part in the Lower Sixth competition is NOW OPEN.  Only students in the UK from year 12 (or below!) are eligible to enter.  The exam will be a 90 minute written paper to be taken under exam conditions in school between June 13 and 22.  The paper will consist of two or three questions which will contain parts that should be easily approachable, but also parts that are designed to challenge students a little further.  Last year's paper is available HERE. Candidates who do well will be given a certificate of achievement, and those who do best will be invited to a residential course to take place at the University of Cambridge at the end of August.

Entrants may ONLY be registered by a teacher from their school – if you are a student wishing to compete, ask your teacher to do this for you.  Teachers must be properly logged in to the C3L6 site and can then register their students HERE.

The 2012 Poster

To promote the competition for 2012, we have sent to all schools in the UK an A1 interactive poster. It shows the flame test colours for nine common metal ions as first featured in a demonstration lecture on Group 1 of the Periodic Table available for free here. With the aid of a smart phone or iPad and the app from Zappar, the poster can be brought to life! The poster has been sent out with the January edition of "Education in Chemistry" so tell your teachers to look out for it. A limited number of additional copies are available to schools; please email poster@C3L6.com with your full school postal address.
